After getting used to new exciting uni life in UoN, you might be considering about getting a part-time job. As an international student, getting a part-time job can be an excellent way to improve your abilities. You can be more independent, more employable, and learn useful skills, enhance your CV, practice your language skills, etc. Also, earning extra money! Here you will find some tips for finding a part-time job.

1. Check your visa first

-Tier 4 (General) visa

Before applying for any jobs, you should check if there are any restrictions from your visa. For the majority of our IMC overseas students, we have the Tier 4 (General) visa for studying in the UK. Tier 4 visa holders are eligible to work in the UK. However, a student holding a Tier 4 visa is only permitted to work :Up to 20 hours per week during term time; Full-time during vacation. So remember to check with your employers about the working hours!

- Exchange students from the China or Malaysia campus

If you are an exchange student from China or Malaysia Campus, with a student visitor visa, you are not allowed to have any kind of part-time job in the UK.

- European Union residents

If you are European Economic Area Students, good news for you, you do not have any restrictions on working abroad in the UK.

-International students aged under 18

If you are coming to the UK and do not reach the age of 18, your visa will not be Tier 4 general, and it will be Tier 4 Child. If you are 16 or above holding the Tier 4 (child)visa, you can work no more than 10 hours per week during term but can work full-time during vacation. For more details about your visa restriction please refer to the UK Broader Agency: https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/uk-visas-and-immigration

Or if you want to know how we have applied for our visa feel free to contact us!

2. Get your Curriculum vitae ready

A CV is an essential document for your job application. Make sure your CV is up-to-date and professional when you apply for jobs. Most of the employers select potential candidates for their post based on your CV; as it will tell them your information without interviewing you. So get a decent CV ready is really important to be successful!CVmaker is a good tool to make your CV looks nicer.

3. Getting a job

Once you get your CV done, you could go to visit UniTemps online. UniTemps is a part of the careers and employability services in UoN, focusing on helping us to find temporary jobs on campus or outside campus. There is also a Unitemps office on the university’s main campus. It is located on B Floor in the Portland Building. They provide a full range of service from giving advice to your CV to advertising available jobs. It is the biggest agency for your part time job!
Check out the website for more information:

If you would like to seek for part-time jobs by your own, try to be active! It may work if you just pop up at Costa or New Look, or any store you are interested in, and ask, “Do you have any part-time job vacancy?” Go and hunt for a job might be more effective than waiting for it to come!

As IMC students, it would be great if you have the opportunities to have some relevant work experiences to our course. So you can also aim to get a job in the media industry. For instance, some Chinese publications may look for temporary assistants on Weibo (Chinese version of Twitter), or you can try using social media like Facebook, Twitter to see if there is any chances to get involved with the local media organizations. Do not miss any possibilities!

4.  Balancing your working and studying

As you have around 16 academic hours and under 20 working hours per week, it is really important for you to manage your time wisely. Personally, doing a part-time job in a restaurant could be quite exhausting at the beginning. Try your best to schedule your timetable better so that you are less likely to fall off from the sky or leaving all the readings behind because of your long working hours.

Worth mentioning, Nottingham Advantage Award may be a good choice to help you balancing your life between working and studying. Advantage Award is a project ran by the university, it offers students a chance to earn extra credits. You can sign up for the Part-time jobs, Vacation jobs or Volunteering modules, working with earning credits, and it will add additional accreditations to your degree.
